6 Days Marangu Routes

overview

The Marangu Route, often referred to as the “Coca-Cola” route, is one of the most popular and straightforward paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Over six days, you will experience a comfortable ascent with accommodation in huts, making it a preferred choice for those seeking a less rugged trek. This route is ideal for climbers who want a relatively easier climb while still enjoying the stunning scenery and diverse ecosystems of Kilimanjaro.

Day 1: Arrival in Arusha

Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be greeted and transferred to your hotel in Arusha. Take time to relax and prepare for the adventure ahead. Enjoy a welcome dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 2: Arusha to Marangu Gate, Start Marangu Trek

After breakfast, travel to the Marangu Gate where you will begin your trek. The trail starts through lush rainforests, offering a gradual ascent. Enjoy a packed lunch along the way. Reach the Mandara Hut for your first night on the mountain, where you will have dinner and settle in for the night.

Day 3: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Continue your trek from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut. The path takes you through a transition from rainforest to moorland. As you ascend, you will have panoramic views of the mountain and surrounding landscape. Arrive at Horombo Hut, enjoy dinner, and relax for the evening.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Depart from Horombo Hut and trek towards Kibo Hut. This section of the route traverses the alpine desert zone, characterized by a more barren landscape. Arrive at Kibo Hut, where you will rest and prepare for the summit attempt. Have an early dinner and rest for the night.

Day 5: Summit Attempt and Descend to Horombo Hut

Begin your ascent to Uhuru Peak early in the morning. The climb is challenging and involves hiking through the night to reach the summit at sunrise. After celebrating your achievement at the top, descend back to Kibo Hut for a brief rest before continuing your descent to Horombo Hut. Enjoy dinner and overnight at Horombo Hut.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate and Departure

Complete your descent from Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate. At the gate, you will receive your summit certificate and celebrate your successful climb. Afterward, transfer back to Arusha for a relaxing evening or head to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure.
