- 6 Days Umbwe Route
overview
Experience the challenging and rewarding adventure of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro via the Umbwe Route, known for its steep and direct path. Over six days, you will traverse through diverse landscapes, from lush rainforests to alpine deserts, culminating in the summit at Uhuru Peak. This route is ideal for those seeking a more secluded and rigorous trek, with fewer climbers compared to other routes.
Day 1: Arrival in Moshi
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be welcomed and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. Enjoy a brief rest and a welcome dinner as you prepare for your upcoming adventure.
Day 2: Moshi to Umbwe Gate, Begin Umbwe Trek
After breakfast, travel to the Umbwe Gate to begin your trek. Starting in the dense rainforest, the trail is steep and demanding. Enjoy a packed lunch along the way. As you progress, the forest begins to thin out, offering first glimpses of the mountain. Arrive at your camp for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp
Continue your ascent through the moorland zone, characterized by unique vegetation and spectacular views of the surrounding landscapes. The path becomes more gradual as you approach Barranco Camp. Enjoy the stunning vistas of the Barranco Wall and the surrounding peaks. After setting up camp, relax with dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Begin your day with a challenging climb up the Barranco Wall, a thrilling section that offers impressive views and a sense of accomplishment. After reaching the top, the trail descends slightly before continuing through the alpine desert zone. Arrive at Karanga Camp, where you’ll enjoy a hearty meal and overnight stay.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Depart from Karanga Camp and head towards Barafu Camp, the last base camp before the summit. The trek will take you through a rugged landscape with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. Arrive at Barafu Camp, where you will rest and prepare for your summit attempt. Enjoy an early dinner and get some rest.
Day 6: Summit Day and Descend to Mweka Camp
Begin your ascent to Uhuru Peak around midnight to reach the summit at sunrise. The final climb is challenging, but the views from the top are breathtaking. After celebrating your achievement, descend back to Barafu Camp for a brief rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp for the night. Enjoy your final dinner on the mountain and relax after the long trek.
Day 7: Departure
Afterward, you’ll be transferred back to Arusha for a relaxing evening or transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure.
