Kilimanjaro · Lemosho Route
Start in the quiet western forests and cross the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower and Barranco Wall to Uhuru Peak.
The climb
Lemosho begins on Kilimanjaro's western side and is known for its scenery and good success rate. You pass through rainforest, open moorland, rugged alpine desert and icy summit terrain.
Seven days on the mountain give you the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower and the Southern Icefields, on a schedule planned around good acclimatisation and backed by an experienced guide, porter and cook team.
Route & elevations
Every climb is led by a professional mountain guide with a full support crew.
Day by day
Times and distances are a guide — your lead guide sets the pace on the mountain.
Day 1: Arrival in Moshi
Overnight: Hotel in Moshi (budget, midrange or luxury)
Our team meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and drives you to your hotel in Moshi, the gateway town to the mountain.
In the evening your lead guide talks you through the climb, checks your gear and answers your questions. The rest of the day is for resting and drinking plenty of water.
Day 2: Lemosho Gate → Mti Mkubwa Camp
Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp (tents)
After park formalities at Lemosho Gate, the trek begins in lush montane forest on the mountain's western side.
Blue and colobus monkeys live here, and the shaded trail climbs gradually to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp for your first night.
Day 3: Mti Mkubwa → Shira 2 Camp
Overnight: Shira 2 Camp (tents)
The trail climbs out of the forest into moorland and over Shira Ridge.
A gentle descent brings you to Shira 2 Camp, with wide views across the Shira Plateau to Kibo.
Day 4: Shira 2 → Lava Tower → Barranco
Overnight: Barranco Camp (tents)
Today is a key acclimatisation day: you climb to Lava Tower, at about 4,600 m, for lunch.
You then descend to Barranco Camp beneath the Barranco Wall to sleep lower — a proven way to help your body adapt.
Day 5: Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp
Overnight: Karanga Camp (tents)
The day opens with a scramble up the Barranco Wall — steep and thrilling, but with no technical climbing.
From the top the trail rolls across alpine valleys and ridges to Karanga Camp. The short distance leaves time to rest and acclimatise.
Day 6: Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp
Overnight: Barafu Camp (tents)
A steady climb across bare, windswept alpine desert brings you to Barafu, the final base camp.
You arrive in time for an early dinner and a summit briefing, then sleep before the midnight start.
Day 7: Barafu → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp
Overnight: Mweka Camp (tents)
Around midnight you begin the slow climb over loose scree toward Stella Point on the crater rim.
The rim leads to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), Africa's highest point, ideally at sunrise. After celebrating you descend to Barafu for brunch and continue down to Mweka Camp.
Day 8: Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate
Overnight: Hotel in Moshi (budget, midrange or luxury)
A final walk down through the rainforest brings you to Mweka Gate.
There you receive your summit certificate and say goodbye to your crew before the drive back to Moshi for a hot shower and a celebration.
Day 9: Departure
Depending on your flight time, we drive you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your journey home.
Continuing on safari or to Zanzibar? We arrange the connection so your next adventure begins smoothly.
